[from a Saturday football preview] This one's going to be a slobberknocker.
just what is a slobberknocker and from whence does this evocative term derive? (again, let's give the furriners first shots)

A game so exciting as to cause xerophagia, effectively, therefore, knocking out any possibility of slobbering?

interesting Rhu-- i thought the exact oposite.. a game that cause fans to become so rabid in their reactions, that you have to be careful that the slobber dripping from their mouths does't hit you.. since the slobber is so thick and volumuous it could knock you out!, or cause bodily harm (as well as being totally gross!)

interesting that you guys[sic] should focus on the reactions of the observers; of course in use the word is meant to apply to the participants (or so I had always believed).

Has it got anything to do with what the team does with the cheerleaders in the changing rooms after the match, by any chance?
The idiot also known as Capfka ...

Simpleton that I am, I suggest it's an event which is, or promises to be, a real stoush. Lots of heavy hits which knock the slobber out of the combatants.
Met some US'ns a while ago who used the term "slugfest" to describe an encounter between two groups of people. I honestly thought they were using "slug" in the UK vulgar sense (ie unit, member, tool, wizzer, dangly bit etc etc) - ie the event was going to be a sexual orgy. Later realised they expected it to be an orgy of violence!!

slobber = foaming at the mouth knocker = punching each other outThe first thing that came to my mind when I saw this phrase (and I had never heard it before) was a boxing match, specifically those slo-mo scenes from Rocky (and every other boxing movie) where after a particularly good whack to the head you can see a prodigious flume of spit 'n' blood shoot out of the punchee's mouth. The other guy has knocked the slobber out of him. Lllllllladies and gentlemen, lllllllllllet's get rrrrrrrrrrrrready to knock ssssssssssslobber!

I should close this one before it falls off the page...
a slobberknocker is just two or more big guys beating the hell out of each other; the subtext being that you couldn't find a more competitive match. you'd be most likely to hear slobberknocker these days during pro wrestling commentary, where Jim Ross has popularized it. but the story goes that it was coined by John Madden, a pro football commentator.
