We need a resurgence of higher standards and expectations all around, as in when the vast majority of society noticeably frowns on and does something about out-of-line behavior. Even something as simple as most patrons in a restaurant glowering at the one unruly table would help. (second post at:

... let's talk about the words you are using to "make your point" in this regard.
appropriate standards - I don't trust the vast majority of society's ability to make this assesment. However, the members of this board, who *clearly do not represent any vast majority, do a fine job of doing that which they/we are here for... whatever that is.
...higher standards and expectations... The standards *here are quite high in comparison to that supposed vast majority you speak of, and it is precisely expectations that will begin to (and has in the past) erode this *quality.

...and our English speaking folks from the other side of the pond (from what I've heard) would artfully® much rather "rant" with us (from my understanding of their understanding of "rant")... but, maybe not!
unruly table- The specific restaurant to which you refer here does make a difference, and goes toward my real reson for answering to this *gratuitous thread... ...although I understand the intent, and intend this often myself, IMHO it is *useless (and don't take that personally, either) to talk about general principles without referring to politics or religon or some other specific form of "solicitation" (sooner or later).

Just read the "Modest proposal" thread on I & A, and it seems we're right back to where we left off at 9/11???? Why do people keep chasing new people away??? Is this some type of warped sport for some of the longtimers? ...
But it really wasn't like that when I first came around. Strangers didn't seem to get punmmeled as much.
That just *smells* like TEd.
