To me, expostulate means to be moved to sudden, forceful disagreement with a speaker, in a person to person contact, possibly even interrupting them. At the moment I can't think of any other way to use it.

I think expostulation just needs an object, it need not be a person. let's see what my friend has to say:
To make friendly remonstrances or representations for the purpose or reprehension or dissuasion; to reason or remonstrate in a friendly manner with (a person), about, for, on, or upon (a thing).
I have expostulated with my wandering thoughts....

But relatively few have, to my knowledge. The most recent and probably most famous would have to be Capital Kiwi, but I know that belligerentyouth and maverick also fit into this category. Whether to count jmh I am unsure and AnnaStrophic certainly was once although she has repatiated.

How on earth did this word get to have two such different meanings?
1.) To speak or write at length; expatiated on the subject until everyone was bored.
2.) To wander freely.
