I'm puzzled by the subject word, which seems to have undergone a, um, er, radical shift in meaning. Since it comes from the Latin word for "root," why do we refer to those who go out on a limb as radicals?
Has its mathematical meaning changed in times past, or just its common usage?
Radical: tuber or not tuber, that is the question....
