I've been asked to solicit ideas for names for a kitten. She's a female long-haired black cat with green eyes, and is hoped to be a mouser.

A name which translates into "Hunter" from, say, Maaori or some such, would be appreciated.

Indonesian for cat (kucing), black (hitam), hunter (pemburu), tiger (harimau), lion (singa). Traditional name for cats Manis (sweet).

Simba. Lion, and is, I think, Swahili.

In Raramuri, the language and real name of the Tarahumara Indians of central Chihuahua, Mexico, the name for cat is Musa(moo-sa).

The Italian for hunter is Cacciatore, providing a ready-made double-pun.

Swahili and Indonesian are related, aren't they? I noticed that singa and simba mean the same thing and are in one letter.

No relation, but I believe Indonesian borrowed the word singa from one of the Indian languages (Sanskrit?), there not being any lions in Indonesia.

In case you were wondering, this is the same singa as in Singapore (Indonesian Singapura), which means Lion City.

When first missionary folks arrived in Hawaii - one lady brought her cat ... when it got on to dry land the cat staggered trying to get it's land legs and the lady said "Poor pussycat."
Hawaiians had no cats and thought the lady was saying what the animal was and so the Hawaians call cats "Popoki." (Long first o.) At least that's the legend!
There are many words for various types of black but all kinda awkward for American tongues.
So "Popoki" and maybe "Po" or "Poki" for short?

I believe this may have clinched it, Max - (caccia~)tori

No doubt Sporteye will confirm in due course.

The initial selection was Cacciatore, but it seems that the kitten's name has since been changed to Purrgatory.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I learned something new upon showing a friend the cleverness above. He guffawed -- and told me that "tori" is japanese for "bird".

Which fits in beautifully with either catch-a-tori or purrr-gu[lp]-tori.

(GASP! just realized that these are two separate, tri-lingual puns!)
