Peggy, my dearly beloved, has used whinge all of the time I've known her, never about me, of course. I assumed it was simply a NC construction, but now I'm beginning to think it is something she picked up from her voracious reading and rereading of classical English mystery novels.

TEd opines that Peggy picked up whinge from classical English mystery novels. Not likely. I am a voracious reader of the said classical English novels and can not remember ever seeing the word in any of them.

TEd opines that BYB is correct. I asked Peggy about it last evening and she said it was from listening to her English relatives. This is a new side to the House hold that I know nothing about. House is her maiden name. Which probably led to some interesting comments by callow HS students in making reference to built like a brick house.

I'm a whinger - a very English trait, I believe.(I have a webpage that demonstrates this fairly well). Whinging is best done when no-one else is paying attention (just like my webpage!). I think a fairly vaild definition of whinging is complaining when it's too late to do any good (I fear we English enjoy getting bad service purely so we can whinge about it afterward)

Old joke: A man traveling by train enters the dining car for breakfast and orders steak and eggs. Informed that steak was not available, the man said that he shipped thousands of pounds of beef on that particular railroad every year and he made it known he was very upset he couldn't get steak and eggs for breakfast. The dining car manager disappeared and when he returned informed the gentleman that he had wired ahead and steak would be put aboard at the next stop just a few minutes away. The man responded. "The hell with it. I'd rather be mad."
