Is anybody else's access to AWAD slow as molasses these days. It is quite annoying. I have to wait a good while for everything Oh, and just for my own personal edification. What is with the big harsh black line at the top of the screen? Seems a little severe, somewhat akin to correctional institutions. Did we not like the old cheerful AWAD headings?

Dear belMarduk: I have not noticed much change in accessing AWADtalk. I shut down with Main Index in view. so when I come back, I come directly to Main Index. But once there, I have annoying delays, which I suspect are fault of my service provider, since comparable delays occur at other sites. Changing from Q&A to Miscellany may take only a couple seconds, or a couple minutes. Don't let it get you, I enjoy your posts and would regret being deprived of them.

Yes, for a couple of weeks it has been that slow and while you were away, we were actually deprived of AWAD completely. There was a whole thread where people described how they coped with the withdrawal symptoms.

Also, while you were away someone said something like "hey, isn't it about time for a change around here?" and there was a flurry of design suggestions, color combinations, placement of headings, etc, etc. There is a whole thread on that also. (Sorry I forgot what it was called) I must confess I did look forward to seeing some exciting innovations, what with all the hoopla about it. I know that mournful black strip was not one of the suggested change. Anyway, I know how severe the withdrawal symptoms are when deprived of AWAD, so I ain't complaining.

What a shame Jazz. Your concept was quite nice and seemed so much, well, friendlier, is the best word I think. Thanks for having taken the trouble.

Well, it was fun working on the designs, and I even got to talk to the Great Anu, so I'm not bitter, just mildly disappointed.

Do we know why the Harsh Black Line won out over the much more pleasant designs put forth by our musical octopod? I assume it was a decision by the mighty Anu among the various options, but the one we've ended up with is pretty lackluster, and some of Jazzo's were really quite nice.

Ya'll sleeping at the wrong time - you should be here in your wee small hours with me, the Kiwis and MrB. Have a look at this to see the size of the problem: http://www.internettrafficreport.com/

Not sadly for us. He's still able (if he has the inclination) to be around at this time, it is just that he can have his morning coffee by his side, not his bed-time cocoa!

Hi, bel, I guess my mind was in slow gear yesterday. Remember some time ago, when I had the same complaint? People offered several ways to have more than one window open at the smae time. The only way I can now recall is to click File, then highlight New, then click Window. While I've been reading here and typing, my Private Message screen has been coming up in another window, so in about one second, I'm going over there to read! Jo, you were the one who first made me aware that this was possible--thank you, Sweetie!

The rapacity of BT is the major stumbling block. The cost of telecommunications, not the internet itself, is absolutely crazy!

Ah! You have finally joined the club, CK! Welcome to GB, anyway - at least your basic health care will be relatively inexpensive - even dental care is less than many other places world wide. But to say this is the land of free speech!!! No-one who has ever received a British phone bill could ever claim that! apols to pre-edit readers for drunken typing - I was sober, but my keybpard had been out drinking with my piano.

Ooh, I've been here a month. Long enough to have had one bill, Rhube. BT and the railways are run by robber barons ...

Sounds like there are PACs in GB too, with the pols taking the cash and favoring those that gave it!
(PACs - Political Action Committees, a way for Big Biz to give mega-cash to politicians)

BT was far worse when they had a monopoly I get my telephone from the Gas Company, these days, and my electricty, too - getting all three from one company gives me various savings on top of their cheaper rates. The railways certainly have gone downwards, so far as service is concerned. Fares are no dearer than when they were nationalized, but the service was much better. trains, more or less ran on time, then, and to where you wanted them to go, not just on the routes that make big profits.

What I don't understand is the British dumb acceptance of the status quo with relation to telecoms. Everybody seems to whinge, but no one seems to be prepared to do anything about it. BT is subject to government oversight, particularly in pricing. If people really wanted change here, they'd pressure the government. For heaven's sake, kill the usage-based call charges. There's no earthly justification for them.

pressure the government
So please explain how I do this in what passes for a democracy in the 21st century UK, having had my vote dismissed as irrelevant for the whole of my adult life?

No, no, the ballot box is too slow, even if it were effective. Pressure groups and lobbying, that's what it takes. A bit of political skulduggery, embarrassment of he nerds in power and downright blackmail. Works every time. Well, it does for them.
