the secret behind the wide screens is this: any continuous string of characters wider than your normal screen width will cause (some) browsers to adjust automatically. so, a long url, a long string of characters unseparated by spaces (we had one recently which was a list of something or other separated by commas only), and this time some people saw it because J. originally had a long string of dashes. most browsers will put a return at a dash in a long string, which is why putting a dash into a long url works to remove the problem. I think a long string of dashes might confuse some browsers.
