While out on my two mile morning constitutional, something reminded me of Finley Peter Dunne's Mr.Dooley, and his remark about posterity, which I cannot quote accurately: "What in hell did posterity ever do for us?"

Please, can someone quote it correctly?

Here are a couple URLs to his quotes:

"What in hell did posterity ever do for us?"

Sounds close enough for me.

a similar construct is credited to Sir Boyle Roche: "Why should we do anything for
posterity -- what has it ever done for us?"

Dear tsuwm: I had never heard of Sir Boyle Roche, but found some quotations from him. He would never have been equal to Finley Peter Dunne in a debate. You have to scroll down a ways.

"What in hell did posterity ever do for us?"

Well, how else would we be able to sit?

There was a time when a portion of my posterity used to sit in my lap, but I never sat on any of it.

When I was in college, we used to have smoked roche, but I certainly don't recall boiling any. If you did that you would have to worry about the tea roche price.

Oh, Ted -- it's so goooood to have you back on form!
GLAL (groaned long and loud.)tea roche price -- Ohmigawd!

Ted : Try this http://
www.workinghumor.com/quotes/finley_peter_dunne.shtml

for some PFDunne punny sayings.

Dunne wrote for a Boston newspaper in the Irish dialect, commenting on politics and life mostly which, today, is difficult to read in the original if you don't have a working acquaintence with the Irish accent. However there are some of the columns in "regular" American in a book. Now out of print but available here and there I hear.
