Is this why I've been having trouble logging on? Anybody else experiencing problems?

This shouldn't oughta be a problem till tonight or tomorrow. It might affect internet access then. Whether there will be any problems from people preparing for the storm is a whole nother question.

The problem with Code Red as I understand it is with Internet Servers. I have been annoyed by inconsistency of time it takes for a command ot be executed, and have wondered if the problem was that the variable routing pattern sometimes involves servers that are "timed out".CK, would you were with us.

Actually, this isn't a virus, it's a worm, so it shouldn't pose any threat to you unless you're using a big company server. It doesn't go through e-mail and attack individual computers like a virus does. The purpose of this worm is to get into big servers and spam the White House website. (I'm probably saying the same stuff that that website says.) And all you have to do to get rid of the worm is restart the computer. It shouldn't threaten your personal computer, but some services from big companies may be temporarily unavailable.

As non-technically as possible what is the difference between a virus and a worm? We had terrible problems last week at work with the syscam worm, with anti-virus alerts going off at people's workstations every five minutes and certain parts of computers becoming unusable (mainly things like being unable to change the display settings).

Code Red worm: From the BBC site at http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_1470000/1470246.stm
quote:
On 18 July just as Code Red was starting to scan for vulnerable web servers, a CSX train carrying hazardous materials was derailed in the Howard Street tunnel in Baltimore.

The derailment and subsequent fire severed cables running through the tunnel used by seven of the biggest net service providers to swap data.

These companies started reporting disruption to the usual running of the net just as Code Red was hitting its stride, leading many people to assume that the worm was doing the damage.
