"Ain't Gonna Study War No More"

The old spiritual use of the word "study" interests me. I suppose it is taken from the Bible, but I have no idea where in the Bible. I find it difficult to rephrase the title using current language. How would the board members do so?

trivialize? back?

Irenology - this seems to be 'peace studies'

Polemology - does someone want to offer a definition? It's not just the study war, but of peace too, or what? Didn't Tolstoy cover this?

Reviving an old thread: The old spiritual use of the word "study" interests me. I suppose it is taken from the Bible, but I have no idea where in the Bible. I find it difficult to rephrase the title using current language. How would the board members do so?

I would suggest the phrase tracks the famous passage of Isaiah 2:4 (New King James Version):

They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore.

Other versions translate this phrase as "train for war" or "military training", but the most common seems to be "learn war". All essentially the same meaning, and one quite different from what awad had supposed.

Professor Gaston Bouthoul of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Sociales in Paris... the founder of Polemology (a word he coined), or the study of war. - Harper's, 1970

...and pole- comes from the Greek word for war.

Dear WW: I think you pole vaulted a bit too far. Not to the North Pole, or the South Pole, but way out of the war zone.

Dear wwh, Excuse me for being late but when I finally remembered all the memories pertinent to your question the freight train that is this forum had answered your question in it's own fashion and moved on to other amusements on other tracks. Now my own comments seem dated and trite.
Big deal. I say -So What! So here goes...

Back in the sixties any cornbred child of the deep south would immediately know the meaning of the word "study" as used in the negro spiritual titled above.

STUDY = to worry about or to concern oneself with, as in...
Bubba: Paw, Junior done stole a dog dat hain't his'n.
Paw: Hush yo mouf, Bubba, I ain't studin' no Junior. We's got corn to pick.

Everybody in Alabama knows that there is no war in Heaven thank you.

wwh kindly sent me some very good links on deer and antlers.
One bit is worth posting and introduces two new words, to me at least. It's about a practice among some hunters of rattling antlers, and, if you check out wwh's link, you'll see antlers entwined, but not locked as those of the dead deer I described in the above post. Here's a bit from the link:

Horn Rattling

The correct terminology is antler rattling, but horn rattling seems to roll off the tongue easier, so we will stick with horn rattling for this article.

You will need a fairly well matched set of deer antlers. Small to medium sized antlers, with 3 or 4 points on each side (not counting the brow tines), seem to work best. (See illustration above). Remove the brow tines and smooth off any sharp points and edges. About two weeks before you plan to use your natural rattling horns, place them in a bucket of water and let them soak until you use them. This will replenish their natural moisture and they will sound more realistic. If you don't have access to natural antlers, you can purchase artificial rattling horns at most deer hunting supply outlets. To avoid self-inflicted hand damage always wear gloves while rattling horns.

...This link shows that deer are polemologists in their own right.

Looks like it comes from the same root as "polemic", wwh. Here is the derivation of "polemic".
[French polémique, from Greek polemikos, hostile, from polemos, war.]
And the definition:
po·lem·ic (p-lmk)
n. A controversial argument, especially one refuting or attacking a specific opinion or doctrine.
A person engaged in or inclined to controversy, argument, or refutation.
Hence, "polemology": "the study of war"???

adj. also po·lem·i·cal (--kl)
Of or relating to a controversy, argument, or refutation.
