Reviving an old thread: The old spiritual use of the word "study" interests me. I suppose it is taken from the Bible, but I have no idea where in the Bible. I find it difficult to rephrase the title using current language. How would the board members do so?

I would suggest the phrase tracks the famous passage of Isaiah 2:4 (New King James Version):

They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore.

Other versions translate this phrase as "train for war" or "military training", but the most common seems to be "learn war". All essentially the same meaning, and one quite different from what awad had supposed.
