Elephants are the largest land mammals in the world, with a strange nasal adaptation known as a trunk. An extremely versatile limb, the trunk is an extension of the nose and upper lip fused together. The extraordinary maneuverability of the trunk is due to the many layers of muscles - including modified forehead muscles, cheek muscles, nasal muscles, and lip muscles. Elephants are classified as ungulates, even though it seems as if they walk flat footed.
