It is very true that many people spend money unwisely as a source of gratification to compensate for unhappiness. I'm bit surprised that I cannot recall a psychiatric term for it.I believe that "retail therapy" could be improved on. I think the Board members can better my best suggestion which is admittedly a bit clumsy: " Spendthrift therapy".

I can't think of a word for the cure, but here's for the sickness: oniomania - an uncontrollable urge to buy things

Good question. What does the phrase mean, please?

Sparteye > "to know one's onions"? ... What does the phrase mean, please?
To know what you're talking about. Able to tell the false from true. Able to choose the good onions in a miscellaneous pile of onions. When it comes to the Law, Sparteye, you know your onions.

oniomania - an uncontrollable urge to buy things Jackie > I think this is commonly known as shopping addiction.
I agree with Jackie about oniomania. "Retail therapy" though has a different meaning to me. It has more to do with shopping than buying. For a woman, it's getting out of the house, away from responsibilty for a few hours. Men do not seem to understand that when we admire an extravagant dress, it is not the dress we want but an invitation to a place or party that calls for wearing such a dress. Daydreams are what retail therapy is all about. Now, is there "catalogue therapy?" she asked, browsing through the latest catalogues from the Smithsonian and from Levingers...

Might this contain a Faldage Willy Shaksper spoonerism?

Assuming you perused the latest AWAD News, you would no doubt have stopped at a certain gentleman's criticism of the recent AWAD topic (new OED additions), in particular Mr. Garg's inclusion of 'retail therapy'. I'm sure Bill's 'a bit clumsy' description sufficiently echoes the views of many here. Was its inclusion in AWAD, nonetheless worthy, if only for a grin?

I'm sorry. Did I miss something? Was last week's theme Words Recently Added to the OED That Will Still be in Standard Use 100 Years from Now?
