It is very true that many people spend money unwisely as a source of gratification to compensate for unhappiness.
I'm bit surprised that I cannot recall a psychiatric term for it.I believe that "retail therapy" could be improved on. I think the Board members can better my best suggestion which is admittedly a bit clumsy: " Spendthrift therapy".
