So, how do you guys pronounce "AWAD"? I tend to say A-wad (A as in sleigh, wad rhyming with sod). I don't like the sound of it, though, so I don't say it much. (A wad of what? is the next logical question. Toilet paper, used kleenex, or something else...! ) When your family asks where you were spending your time, how do you answer? "On the Board" or "on my word group" are my most popular, but I find them both somewhat unsatisfactory.

Yeah, Ay (to rhyme with sleigh) and Wad (to rhyme with sod in most {notably not eastern Mass, which would be sawd} English dialects, at least the ones I know about) emphasis on the first syllable (the confusion with a wad, a wad of what? would only hold if it were pronounced uh *wad). If I don't use it when talking about it with non-AWADdies it's because it doesn't say much all by itself; it requires a lot of explanation, so I normally just start with the explanation. If I'm talking with another AWADdy I'll refer to it as AWAD.

Now that you mention it ... I tend to put an "R" in it and pronounce it AWARD. Subliminal mayhap?

When discussing it I generally just use wordsmith.org. It's more descriptive and less confusing. Plus, using arcane acronyms is kinda weird, doncha think?

I usually say "Oh, yeah, that's a word a day" whenever I see AWAD.

I tend to pronounce AWAD A (as in Slay)-wad, sorta like AWOL. But that's only to myself. To friends and family I mention "that word board on the web."

Count me in with all the other sods. For those who don't know what it is, I just say an Internet discussion about English.

Hmmm....I think I like WordBoard better than my previous "Word Group". (Makes it sound like a support group, although it is that, sort of!) Maybe I will switch. By now my husband has worked out what the heck I'm talking about, anyway. I'm always asking him things to get another, hopefully unbiased, Winnipegger's view on words - "What would you call the thing on a gas stove where you put the pot? Where do your parents park their car? If I said 'learning curve' what do you picture?" and so on...
