And that lucifer is another word for match, as in the World War I army song:
'Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag
and smile, boys, smile.
What's the use of worrying?
It never was worthwhile
As long as you've a lucifer to light your fag,
Smile boys that's the style.'
Or something like that, anyway. (Jackie and other North Americans, please don't be misled by the British use of the word fag!)
