The lilac's are in full bloom in my backyard, and they gave such a powerful aroma - the kind with a million memories attached.

Does anyone else pronounce it "lie-lock" - vs - "lie-lack"?

Just wanted to concur with your "lie-lick" as an excuse to congratulate you belatedly on becoming a veteran. And then there were three (again).

You know, I hadn't noticed the number of posts I've accumulated for some time ... thank you! How many is it until whatever the next level is?

Onward and Upward (unlike the Hurricanes!) to Pooh-Bah, at 1600.

Oh, so the Chiefs won, did they? Bloody yappies. Damn. Bring back Umaga, concussed or not, I say!

1600? Ah well, I'll forget about it again, then, like I did last time!

Ah, lilacs! With just a bit of an "ah" sound in second syllable. Like the French for lake - "lac". My dictionary gives three ways of pronouncing it.When I was in Massachusetts, I had the misfortune of buying some by mail that were infected with a fungus, and wiping out all of the others.

To think I actually giggled when my English professor pronounced it "lie-lock"! I feel so cheap.
Around here it's always "lie-lack," unless you happen to be my English professor.

Apropos of nothing: Lilacs are one of my favorite flowers, not least because they start blooming just before my birthday. (hint, hint)

As soon as your tresses have grown long enough to allow the Prince to effect your rescue, move North to New Hampshire, Rapunzel, where the lilac blooms from mid-to-late-May and we honor it as the Official State Flower.

I'm a "lie-lock" supporter all the way, and I was just thinking about that this morning as I walked to school and noticed the lack of lilacs in St. John's. I recall getting teased by my Saskatchewanian friends about how I said it. Apparently when you cross the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border, the pronunciation changes!
