Something to contemplate! (I didn't even try to put this thru dear AEnigma! It would have had a brain storm!

"I think that you will be interested to learn that the European Union Commissioners have announced that agreement has been reached to adopt English as the preferred language for European communications, rather than German, which was the other possibilty. As part of the negotiations, Her majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish
(Euro for short).
In the first year, "s" will be used instead of the soft "c". Sertainly, sivil servants will reseive this news with joy, and keyboards could have one less letter. Also the
hard "c" will be replaced with "k". Not only will this klear up konfusion, but keyboards kan loose a further letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replased by "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20 persent shorter.
In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the
removal of double letters, which have always been a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent "e"'s in the languag is disgrasful, and they would go.
By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" by "z" and "w" by "v".
During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from words kontaining "ou", and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. Arriving tardes zum bal, a couple of comments.
Miles Kington ran a series in Franglais for a long time. The rules were quite strict about what parts of speech were in which language or which grammatical rules applied and it was surprisingly difficult to construct a piece which had the same feel to it.
My wife's grandparents on her mother's side were Swiss and we have spent many a vacation in the family chalet in the Swiss Alps with Swiss (french speaking) relatives. We were often joined on these vacations by a German family from Berlin. (The mother was a Red Cross child who was semi-adopted by the Swiss Great Uncle and Aunt). In this mix there were people who only had one language, some who had two, and others who had three, all to different degrees of fluency.
Tryng to ensur ethat everyone had the same idea of where and when we were going and who was doing the shopping for what was a major logistical exercise. Although the Swiss are noted for accomodating different languages (English included), ordering in a restaurant caused endless confusion. As soon as the waitperson thought they had a language to ask the next person in line, they would find somone interpreting again.
And yes, sentences were interspersed with "borrowed" words, or could start in one language and end in another.

Rodward, your vacations remind me of my trip to Germany, which I took with a friend, Olaf, who is a translator. We stayed in the home of a couple of Olaf's long-time friends, and one evening we had dinner at a restaurant with the friends' family, including the mom's sisters. One of the sisters had moved to Italy, and her children spoke no German. I spoke no German. Most people at the table spoke German, and the Italians spoke a bit of French with someone else. I smiled a lot. My weak Spanish didn't enter into things.  All together, there were speakers of about ten languages at the table, and the only one who spoke them all was Olaf. I have always envied him his aptitude.

re "smelange" in another thread
that reminds me that we used to call this mixture of French/English/German "mélangue" from mélange (mixture) and "langue" (language). And the family when speaking so (the noise level tended to rise) was known as "the mélanguerie" from menagerie. This immediately became mondegreened into "my lingerie". The looks we got from other English on the ski slopes when calling out from the lifts to a member of the family phrases such as "The rest of my lingerie is down at the restaurant" were comical.
Another phrase in common use in the family was "Saucisse Erotica" instead of "Saucisse à rôtir".
Does anyone remember the "Fractured French" phrases such as:
coup de grace = lawnmower? I made a fractured translation of La Marseillaise about a year ago. Too big to post so send me a private message if you want iit.
