There was, as always, an ulterior motive involved in changing threads...

It's an opportunity to wish a VERY happy birthday to my beloved Scribbler~ whose presence and elegant contributions are so very much appreciated. May the coming year bring you and Clan Scribbler the richest of blessings.

And a double wish goes to the world renowned Of Troy, she who has been immortalized in the annals of AWAD news. May the fortuitous timing of your newfound fame be a harbinger of a serendipitous year to come

*hugs* to both of our special birthday members.

Happy Birthday to our "All-glorious Helen of Troy, and, may I speak for both of us who share this natal-day,thanks to all of our AWAD friends who have kindly sent felicitations to us. Your well-wishes mitigate the concerns concomitant with ever advancing years (although, as often noted, such concerns are devoutly to be wished when "The Grim Alternative" is considered. Thanks to all for your thoughtfulness. Helen, we share this natal day with one another, but it is also a day celebrated for thousands of years. Let's share "our day" with all and celebrate, again, another annual resurrection of Spring. Let G. Chaucer pronounce the "invocation" and then let the festivities begin:

In reply to:

"Whan that the month of May
Is comen, and that I here the foules synge,
And that the floures gynnen for to spryngen.
Farewel my bok, and my devocioun"

"Farewell my book, Geoff?" but a summer-trash read is, in this enlightened century sometimes acceptable. And of course we will be permitted to "Check the Board." Let's take off a day or two, or perhaps a Spring and Summer to enjoy the weather.

Time out to celebrate! Our guests are arriving! I have not overlooked my annual reading of "Ulysses" (Tennyson). A bit later this evening (as Time permits), I'll post an abbreviated version (the "good parts") for you and me, Helen, and for any others seeking encouragement against advancing years. Scribbler

O.K., Helen, I'll type and we'll both read and anyone who wishes may read as well. Of course, we RECOMMEND the entire work, but, if you're in a hurry, read on:

Ulysses - - Alfred Tennyson

It little profits that an idle king,
By this still hearth, among these barren crags,
Matched with an aged wife, I METE AND DOLE
UNEQUAL LAWS UNTO A SAVAGE RACE,
THAT HOARD, AND FEED, AND SLEEP, AND KNOW NOT ME.

I cannot rest from travel; I WILL DRINK
LIFE TO THE LEES!: .....................
.........................I am become a name;
For always roaming with a hungry heart
Much have I seen and known;cities of men
And manners, climates, councils, governments
Myself not least, but honoured of them all;
And drunk delight with my peers,
Far on the ringing plains OF (windy) TROY.

I am a part of all that I have met;
Yet all experience is an arch wherethrough
Gleams that untravelled world, whose margin fades
For ever and for ever when I move.
HOW DULL IT IS TO PAUSE, TO MAKE AN END,
TO RUST UNBURNISHED, NOT TO SHINE IN USE
AS THOUGH TO BREATHE WERE LIFE .........

There lies the port; the vesel puffs her sail;
There gleam the dark broad seas. ...........
.................you and I are old;
OLD AGE HATH YET HIS HONOR AND HIS TOIL;
Death closes all: but something ere the end,
SOME WORK OF NOBLE NOTE, MAY YET BE DONE,
not unbecoming men that strove with gods

(AND Goddesses, Cara Dea,)

..........................COME, MY FRIENDS,
TIS NOT TOO LATE TO SEEK A NEWER WORLD.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
of all the western stars, until I die.

THOUGH MUCH IS TAKEN , MUCH ABIDES; AND THOUGH
WE ARE NOT NOW THAT STRENGTH WHICH IN OLD DAYS
MOVED EARTH AND HEAVEN; THAT WHICH WE ARE, WE ARE;
ONE EQUAL TEMPER OF HEROIC HEARTS,
MADE WEAK BY TIME AND FATE, BUT STRONG IN WILL
TO STRIVE, TO SEEK, TO FIND, AND NOT TO YIELD.

Here endeth this Birthday Scripture!

Scribbler

Happy Birthday, Marianna =)

To those of you who have been relying on the list in the other birthday thread:

i've deleted the other birthday list, so that i only have to edit one post each time a new birthday comes in. There've been a few added lately, and if i've missed anyone, please send me a PM.

Since I have inside information that tells me that there is little chance that our satin will be at a computer on her birth anniversary (and I know she won't be here the day before), let me start this a li'l bit early by offering the "Happiest Birthday of them All" wishes.

CHEERS!

Happy Birthday, satin!

I'm still waiting for my partner to git down to business and have our baby (due date was yesterday - eep!). But there's a decent chance that while you're away from AWAD celebrating your birth, I'll be away from AWAD celebrating (or assisting with) another.

To everyone - Thank you for your kind wishes.

As I will be in Florida for the next week, I will be having my normal case of AWAD withdrawal-ARGGGH, but I will be with my daughter so I will try not to miss you all too much.

To Hyla: Good Luck! I will be thinking of you.

To Bingley: When I leave Florida next Thursday, the only thing I will be thinking is I can't wait to see what I missed here. That will last until I log on and find out that it will probably take me two weeks just to catch up.
