For a witty (one-screen only) account of the history of US crosswords, written by one of the top constructors, see:

so Mr. Reagle is a "constructor". hmmmph. I feel a certain obligation to inform y'all that I've always (well, not *always) thought of these folks as metagrobologists, and I'm sorely disappointed that a "constructor" wouldn't flaunt the word.

-maf (metagrobologists are funambulists?)

p.s. - for anyone who was intrigued by the Ntlakyapamuk reference, here is the apposite link (ILIU):

Do we have a constructor hiding in our midst? It seem the NY Times crosswords themes are a few weeks behind our active threads..

Today it was a collection of Tom Swifts-- just last month we had an active thread of them..
and its not the first time-- words i have stumbled across here, or themes, have re-appeared a few weeks later in puzzles-- has any one else noticed this?-- or is just one of those things.. like the D-Day cross word puzzle?

You may be on to something there, Sherlock of troy.

Just because we're not paranoid doesn't mean they aren't really after us.

Did I sound paranoid? I was aiming for curious. There was the interesting case of the crossword puzzle that came out on D-day. It had been created some weeks before hand. But a number of the answers shared codes words for the D-day invasion.

Omaha (as in Omaha beach) is the one I remember. One of the members of the armed forces, was shocked and dismayed as he completed the crossword puzzle– was it a warning/secret message to the germans?

an investigation ensued – and the constructor was cleared, and the editor.. It was just as if the key words for the invasion had miasma, and occurred.

but some requests here at AWAD, i.e., words with 3 vowels in a row– these are good words for puzzlers.. Especially on Saturday, when the NY Times puzzle often has 1 across, 2 across and 3 across as 17 character answers! And with good crossword puzzle symmetry*– it mean the last 3 across answers are also the full width of the puzzle! Words that stack up three vowels could be useful words.

(*Yes, this is a clear case of the Y acting as a vowel—which is it is not doing in yo-yo)

I occasionally have this problem as well - especially when particular trees are blooming, with all that pollen in the air, sometimes miasma makes it hard to breathe.

Dear Helen, you are just fine. I was poking the Borax (a weak solution) ... I have to stop that

If it's any consolation, Helen, I think you're curious
