Sandbagging
'Sandbagging' refers to the act of slugging someone on the head with a sandbag -- usually the act of street Apaches, a sneak attack. Hence the application in cards. It actually means to incur a loss on another player (or partnership) by understating your own holding, as in pinochle, when a player or set of partners will refuse to bid even with a good hand to cause the dealer to be 'stuck' with the bid which he cannot make and thus take a penalty.
Thanks for all the insight into the "sandbagging" discrepancy, guys! After all the input I have to agree that sucking
somebody into the bet by hiding a good hand is the original and most prevalent usage in card playing circles. Funny thing was, in our little poker clache right out of high school, the guy who introduced the term to us was our "elder statesman" and beer-runner. He was 24 and we were all 18 and 19 when the drinking age was still 21. So, naturally, we pretty much went along with this guy and followed his lead if we didn't want to go thirsty! He used sandbag and sandbagging for bluff and bluffing and we picked up on it, and used it that way for years before we disbanded. Course, we did humor the guy and keep him around for the beer more than anything else...so he probably didn't get it right. But just another curious way language can evolve as we go along! And the original "usage" for sandbags themselves is pretty interesting, too! Ouch!
