You're welcome, Dave. Dave, don't do that. I can't let you do that, Dave.
Oh hell, HAL. Am I seeing stars because I'm inside a huge black obelisk or is it because I've been holding my breath for FIFTEEN DAMNED MINUTES? Now, open that door or I'll do more than just unplug you!
The idiot also known as Capfka ...

Really interesting link, Max - thanks. I particularly loved the idea of a 'redundancy' that was yet integral to the circuit's function in a way that could not be understood by our existing electronics theory! Never mind HAL - here comes the Skynet out of Terminator

. If a computer could demonstrate objectively that it is genuinely thinking about "What am I and who am I and what is my place in the scheme of things?" I would concede defeat. But I have no idea how you might prove or disprove whether it has been achieved or not.If a computer could demonstrate objectively that it is genuinely thinking about "What am I and who am I and what is my place in the scheme of things?", then it would be definitely superior to any human being. Or did you ever encounter somebody capable of such a feat? Quite apart from that, there would never be unanimity about the ranking of the machine: one part of humanity would say it is inferior, the other, superior. But "like" humans? You would need 7 billion different machines BTW I like this thread. Don't let it go down

You're welcome, Dave. Dave, don't do that. I can't let you do that, Dave.Haven't been able to open your link yet, Max, but since you brought up HAL: his most beautiful line; the one which, by our acceptance of it and the "interior state" it purports to represent, best demonstrates our inherent willingness to give machines empathic recognition (whew!) is: "I think I deserve an answer to that question, Dave." I was gonna stick that in this infernal thread earlier on but, once Cap (hi Cap! ) got on AI I said to myself 'this can of worms is good for my fish than I can fry.'
