After the thread on email clients, I thought that the following link might be a salutary lesson in the dangers of trusting Microsoft. It also a reminder of the importance of reading the small print. I post it here because I am sure that most here would cherish their ownership of their own intellectual property. If that is the case, don't use Hotmail. The following link demonstrates that Heinlein got it right when he coined TANSTAAFL. http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/18002.html

Using Hotmail or Yahoo mail is an exercise in cheapness, not confidentiality. You do so at your own risk. Yet get what you pay for. Or not.

Max...I use Hotmail (and a bit of Yahoo)!!! Really appreciate you posting. I am on a cable hookup and Outlook Express is "their" email. That is MSN stuff...is that any better??? What emails are considered "first class"??? On Hotmail I get lots of junk mail...raunchy sounding stuff I never open and block senders. I guess that article by Orlowski explains it!!! Thanks again for warning.

Sorry, Bill, but this was no joke. The point is as CapK made clear - you get what you pay for, and you never get nuttin for nuttin. In the case of Hotmail, the price you pay for their free service is allowing them to plunder your communication to their profit. Here's a link to the M$ page itself, a page on which they specifically warn you that your communications are public, not private. http://www.passport.com/Consumer/TermsOfUse.asp

The Data Encryption Standard asks That is MSN stuff...is that any better???Nope. Get yourself a real ISP with a confidentiality policy. And always, as MaxQ says, read the fine print ...

I have always treasured a line in an old "Amos and Andy" radio show almost sixty years ago. The show involved two white comics impersonating black men in a way that was not demeaning to Afican-Americans, but demonstrated their capacity to be shrewd as well as entertaining. At a time when he was in the insurance business, and a client was demanding benefits he was not entitled to, Andy got off the line: "The large print giveth, but the fine print taketh away."
