On a completely non-word note (I feel very strongly about keeping threads on track, ya know) - I bought my first house last night! Now my partner and I will actually have a place for our baby (due in mid-June) to which to come home. [howling-exultation-mixed-with-profound-relief-emoticon]
Paul B -- the whole idea of this space is to have a high old "off thread" good time! ------------------------------------------------------- And dear Hyla ... no offense intended ... I do have these "moments!" And the second meaning of spouse in the OED is a fiance. ?? !! Or have I "stepped in it" again? (wringing hands )
Anyway ... I repeat my hearty congratulations on your new home and hope you live there happily and in good health for many years to come. Do let the Board know when your child is born. Have you chosen a name(s)? Aloha wow
Congrats. People tend to remember the first, the best, and the most recent of anything. I hope that this first is the best for as long as you need it to be, and that when/if you move on, you remember it with affection.
As for naming the house, we tend to see names such as "Chez Nous", "Mon Repos" in UK. Following this theme of calling it "My House" in a foreign language, I tried to do just that for our first house, but in Efik, which was the language I tried unsuccesfully to learn in East Nigeria on VSO (UK version of Peace Corps). For some reason my wife absolutely forbade me to call our house "Ufok mi".
I don't suppose you'll be asking me to suggest a name for the baby?
Funny stuff on naming the house - I hadn't even thought about it. I'll discuss it with the folks at home, and probably return with a request for y'all.
As to kid names - if it's a boy, we're looking at Simon for a first name and Christopher (my name) for a middle. A girl will probably have Lucy for a first name, and the middle name is a source of frequent discussion and no conclusion.
Thanks for the kind words, gang. Glad that you're all around.
Lucy for a first name, and the middle name is a source of frequent discussion and no conclusion.
May I suggest Ann? There are a couple of Anns on the Board which indicates Anns are well read and intelligent women! It's an easy name to grow old with. And I have found God has a hard time saying "No" when reasonable requests are forwarded through His Grandmother. wow
This lacks the gravitas of tsuwm "Robin and Marion" quizz but a bit of fun ne'er goes amiss. wow > Ever wondered which cartoon character you are most like? Well, a team of researchers got together and analyzed the personalities of cartoon characters, and put the information gathered into this quiz.

Can someone explain to me how any flatliner could hope to follow this subthread? Come a couple days down the road it's gone be like pulling hen's teeth just to figure out what posts are in this branch.
Perhaps more accurate (at least in my case) is what my family does: determine which Winnie-the-Pooh character you are. I am Rabbit, my husband is Eeyore, my older son is Roo, and my younger son is Tigger. Jackie, I'm thinking that you are Kanga. Tsuwm must be Owl. What about everybody else? Does anybody claim to BE POOH?
Faldage: Can someone explain to me how any flatliner could hope to follow this subthread? Come a couple days down the road it's gone be like pulling hen's teeth just to figure out what posts are in this branch.
Honey, this here flatliner follows just fine. With all due respect for all y'all threadnodists™ [nod-to-tsuwm e], we few (especially those of us who run Macs) just flat think different. ****
I put the "comics" quizz in for fun, fun, fun! It's officially Spring and it's ffreezing cold and there's snow on the ground and that's my excuse. Don't tell me anyone is taking it seriously!
I took the test twice as I was ambiguous about some answer-choices. BUT I didn't add up score until both were done ... came out a combo of Tweety and Pepe. Oh well. wow P.S. If anyone is "Pooh" would it not be The Great Anu? Or would he be A.A. Milne?
Huh? CapK, who characterizes 19th century love letters as missives misleading misses, is Pepe LePew? Ha ha ha! The truth will out! You really are a hopeless romantic. You just don't like those letters stealing your thunder!!!!
Jackie, are you listening?
CapK, if you've never seen M. LePew, you have missed a treat. He is a Warner Brothers cartoon skunk, whose entire reason for being is romance. And in every episode, some poor female black cat accidently gets white paint along her back, and Pepe, thinking she is a beauuuutiful fem skunk, pursues her relentlessly, despite kitty's desperate attempts to rebuff his advances.
Oh, I see. Dumb but romantic and stinks like a - well, skunk. Well, Wow, back to the quiz drawing board for you, my girl! I do NOT stink! Yes, Sparteye, I am listening. So, C.K., by saying you do not stink, are you then implying that the other two descriptors are...accurate? HA!
Well, Wow, back to the quiz drawing board for you, my girl! I do NOT stink!
Neither does Pepe ... he's a cartoon and so the only scent possible would be a faint whiff of ink .... ? Personally I find the scent of ink irresistible! wow

I ran into this French phrase in a group of things like "savoir faire" and a few others quite common. But this one I had never heard before, and could not deduce meaning. I found this on Internet:
L'esprit de l 'escalier" - the French expression for the moment when you realize what you should have said when confronted with a cutting remark - the clever retort that would have devastated your opponent but only occurs to you after you've left the room and are stomping down the staircase in retreat.
Writers often have this feeling, although some are notoriously good at cracking wise and coming up with the snappy comeback. Parker, Benchley and the other Algonquin wits come to mind, of course. (Pompous young man: "I can't bear fools." Dorothy Parker: "Apparently, your mother could.")
This phrase is included in the wonderful book They Have a Word For It, which I know some of us on the board are familiar with, and the others should get to know. I'm particularly fond of this phrase, as I was visiting some friends in Paris years ago, and had an argument with a friend of mine while out on the town. Then, upon returning to the house of the friends I was staying with, while on the staircase, I thought of the witty reply I had needed earlier. I don't recall the exchange at all, but this word has always rung very true for me, as I actually thought of the witticism while on the escalier - not only a staircase, but a French one.
Since there are comments from time to time on the Board, I suggest you take a look at this : for the latest on the vote count in Florida ... the April 4 issue of The Miami Herald at : http://www.miami.com/herald/ The newspaper hired accountants and counted ... how it was done is one of the sections. Verrrry interesting! wow
A while ago InselPeter challenged somebody to name the largest living thing. I knew it was a fungus living underground, but did not know name. I entered "mycelium largest living thing" in Yahoo search box. Up came several URL's. The third one down mentions 2,200 acre fungus in Oregon. Click on that. I can't make URL below work. http://www.newhousenews.com/archive/story1b080700.html
I read about this somewhere and I believe there is some ambiguity surrounding the idea if the single largest living thing. The problem with fungi being that, while all the cells may have been clonally generated, this doesn't necessary mean they are still the same organism, since fungi use asexual reproduction pretty frequently.
Richard Dawkins actually discusses this issue (some 15 years before this fungus was discovered, I think) in The Extended Phenotype, his follow up to the now-legendary The Selfish Gene.
All these 'organisms on the edge' are reminders, I think, of how fragile our categories really are, and how meaningless the words we use can sometimes be.
