Honestly, I don't expect this thread to go very far, but I didn't know where to turn.

From Black's Law Dictionary:

Cocotte: a woman who leads a fast life, one who gives herself up for money. Also a poached egg.
Cite: Rovira v. Boget, 240 N.Y. 214, 148 N.E. 534, 535.

and well you *should laugh. it appears to be the merging of two French words, (1)cocotte, orig. a child's name for a hen, a prostitute; one of a class of the demi-monde of Paris, and (2)cocasse a kind of pot, a poached egg would be prepared/served en cocotte.

Yours is the second post that brings Oshima's "In the Realm of the Senses" to mind. Is it me?

Also a poached egg.

French Québec cocotte is either a) a hen b) a big stewing pot c) a term a affection for little girls eg. ma cocotte d)a cone from any fir/pine tree.

This type of change in meanings can be a little disastrous when France Frenchies and Québec Frenchies merge. My sister's ex-mother-in-law took great exception to my sis calling her daughter cocotte or catin - two words that mean prostitute in France. Here "catin" is akin to the English "dollie" instead of doll.

When I asked what this was on a menu, I was told " a very young coq au vin".
