OP Thirty-some years ago I ran across a marvelous word, but have forgotten it. As I recall, it was in the supplement to the OED.
My memory is that the word started with "pedi" The definition was (I believe) "to tread very carefully, for example as to cross a stream by stepping from stone to stone." A marvelous metaphoric image for traveling along a hazardous path.
If you can find the word, I'd love to see it again.
