I came across this word in a book today & can’t find a definition. I thought it might be a typo but it’s used several times. The context is vague but suggests it might mean “an old crony” or similar.

I drew a complete blank on this one. It would be helpful to know which book it was found in.
I checked all my paper and online dictionaries and encyclopedias and the word is in none of them. Yes knowing the
book you found the word in would help.
