OP I assume that "veritable" was once pronounced the way it is spelled, ending with "-bluh" in the French way. When did A-S words like "kettle, bottle, settle, spittle, nettle, mettle, fettle, little," become "kettel, bottel, settel, spittel, nettel, mettel, fettel, littel"? Or were they always "misspelled"?
