I recently offered to compile a list of AWADers' birth anniversaries (i've forgotten which member it was that described it this way, but i was so impressed by its accuracy, as compared to "birthday" that i had to repeat it here) for purposes of posting the list on Max' idrive account.

Since my query was within another thread, i suspect many of you may have missed it. If you'd like to be included and haven't already given me your information, send me a PM or just post it here.

it'll also be interesting to see which of us share the same date; paulb and i had a discussion of the 'group of 30' principle, since our birthdays happen to fall just one day apart.

Thanks

~b

PS to jackie: You don't need to send yours, obviously. all of the best to you, on your special day *hug*

Anu HAS no birthday ... because fictitious characters are not born, they are imagined.

I wasn't sure this would interest anyone, but my search proved it was a YART, which suggests that - at least at one point in time - some AWADers found this intriguing:

As was discussed a while back, statistical evidence suggests that in any group of 23 or so people, two will share a birthday.

I've thus far received 32 replies, and amazingly there are *three* sets of shared birthdays: Hyla/Shoshannah, Jackie/TEd (! can you believe we missed this one!?) and Scribbler/of troy.

there is also a noticeable skew towards February-May birthdays (22 of 32, or 69%, which is amazing considering the expectation that any four month interval would likely produce one-third of the bdays). Also, there are no birthdays listed in January or June, and only one each in August, November and December.

BTW, does anyone have a link for free downloadable software that will produce a distribution curve? i'm not very handy with excel, so i'm sure i'm missing something, but the chart i was able to produce by converting the dates to decimal form seemed woefully lacking.

Keep the birthdays coming; it's great entertainment for me (and please, no 'get a life' suggestions )

Are you interested in astrology or birth star constellations and the like then Bridget?
You're not going to tell us our (or AWAD's) future are you?

The rate you have got is quite a bit higher than 'expectation'. The chances of two people in 23 sharing a birthday are just over 50%, far from a sure thing. Of course, for a sure thing you will need at least 367 people!

A simple (but tedious?) was to do a distribution 'curve' on Excel would be to simply have 365/366 rows and put a one against them for each person on that day. You could have a separate sheet for these 'tally marks' and then a consolidation sheet that shows, respectively, daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly totals. Then create graphs/charts to your heart's content...

In a word: No.

and btw, my dear, you've been living up to your moniker lately, haven't you?

shared birthdays: Hyla/Shoshannah

Downright weird. This is an area of my life where I have experienced a disproportionate share of synchronicity. In college, I twice lived next-door to someone who shared my birthday, and once lived upstairs from one person with my birthday at the same time I was living next door to someone with my birthday. Currently, my next-door neighbor has the same birthday as well. Weird.

It would happen that at AWAD, another important area of my life, there'd be someone with the same birthday.

Hyla

There's nowt so queer as life - to adapt the Yorkshire phrase.

My daughter's partner's father (you might say, her father-out-law) not only shares a birth anniversary, but the actual birth DAY with me.

No, no. I've been living it up with Monika lately.

In Baveria there's the highly philosophical:
Dinge gibt's, die gibt's gar net

Despite having a very German last name (Reiner) and a very Germanic appearance (blond hair, blue eyes, fair skin), my tongue is apparently not German. My greatest achievement in the language was to order 100 grams of cheese in a shop while Eurailing my way out of Germany years ago. So - translation of the above, please?

Hyla brings up a good point. I would appreciate translations whenever foreign phrases are used, as I am not proficient in any language except mine own.

... and that's not even standard German. It's Bavarian dialect. If our whippersnapper does not provide a translation soon, I'll be glad to hazard a guess.

I really don't know any German dialects, but I have a guess to offer. How many of you have ever seen the original film Die Blaue Engel with Marlene Dietrich? She sang a song in that (also recorded it -- I have it on disc) which went, in part,

Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuß
auf Liebe eingestellt,
denn das is meine Welt,
und dann : gar nichts !

I'm in love from head to foot
for that's my world;
and then : nothing at all.

EDIT:

Sorry to those of you who have been relying on this list for birthday notices; it got a bit cumbersome having to edit this list as well as the one at the top of BIRTHDAYS PART II, so i've deleted this one.

The current list can be found at http://wordsmith.org/board/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=announcements&Number=25873

Hi Bob: Of course, this song is probably much better known in its English translation as "Falling in love again", but the original German version sounds much better. Great film, too!

By my calculations, CapK, you and SWMBO had better get to business in about two weeks.

SWMBO wouldn't dream of taking the chance that her offspring might share her birthday - Christmas Eve. Probably the cruelest "trick" you can play on a child, she tells me!

oopsy daisy. i forgot about the I&A section
For those of you still waiting, te-he:

Dinge gibt's, die gibt's gar net(nicht) means:
'Some things exist, that don't' or
'Some things that are, are not'
They have a host of these rather inane sayings, e.g.:
'Leut' gibt's, die gibt's gar net' (meaning: Some people exist, that don't)
'Des wois i hoib, hoib i', or rather in HD 'Das was ich habe, habe ich' (meaning: That which I have, I have)

p.s. perhaps you shouldn't have asked, eh!
btw, a Bavarian dictionary can be found here: http://www.planet-interkom.de/schneiderbauer/bayrisch.htm

Oh, my gosh... i just realized i typed your birthday wrong on the calendar, david... so sorry!!

Happy belated birthday (it was April 18th!!!)

It's a big one too, isn't it? One day when you're old like me you'll probably make silly mistakes, too

*hug* hope it's a terrific one.

EDIT:

okay... this is really pathetic... 1) i thought today was the 19th. in fact, i actually thought today was *thursday*, the 19th (2) i thought i must've written it wrong on the calendar i'd posted, because i simply couldn't fathom jackie being a day late (3) i didn't bother to check before i posted (4) the really, really silly thing is that i just checked the calendar a few days ago and made a mental note to post a birthday wish at the appropriate time (5) since by friday i'll likely think it's saturday the 21st, i'll just wish you happy belated birthday now, BobYoungbalt, and save a keystroke or two.

a belated birthday wish to you Flatlander..

But B96-- its not just you.. the week is kerfluee! I think its because Tax Day-- April 15th-- fell on the 16th-- so we have are days and dates out of order-- or maybe we are just suffering from April Floo! Every check i have written this week has been dated wrong-- and at the grocery store-- the check out clerk said-- its been the same all day!

A) A happy Birthday to everone what has a birthday today

2) A happy Belated Birthday to everone ain' got no birthday today

Þ) The reason we all got screwed up on what day it was is because Friday seemed like Saturday, so Saturday had to seem like Sunday an that threw us all off for the whole rest of the week
