Are there other words which retain their original meaning, even when some letters are removed, like this:
FRANGIBLE = FRAGILE = FRAIL

A.W.A.D. offered this as its weekly theme during the week of Monday, Jan 31, 2000 (you can find the list in the A.W.A.D. archives down the cyber-street), beginning with catacomb = tomb. Don't think there were any trios, though, just pairs.

Don't know any triplets, but have long been intrigued by a double doublet (if that makes sense):

APPROPRIATE -> APT
APPOSITE -> APT

Alas, I rarely see apposite used anywhere. And it's such a lovely sounding word too.

cheer

the sunshine warrior

ps. DECEASED -> DEAD is an easy one

I use it all the time! But I guess that would be considered apposite, given my avocation.

David,
here's one that HAS to be correct, at least part of the time: pessimist=pest.
