by the way, there is an old thread (titled 'coined words') under 'weekly themes' which has a few...

It is named after someone, but not anyone famous. It was named after a man named Brandon grifrin. Khenhoff is an extreme corruption of grifin

It was a very profound pet behaviour observation. Have you never seen canines in pursuit of felines? It happens in France also. I sincerely deny any intention of offending.

One of the funniest things I ever saw was a German Shepherd in full flight from a nondescript household moggy. The dog was running like his life depended on it, it all seemed rather Leary.

Well, going back to the distant subject of coined words, There are two things I love about words, coined words and anagrams. I have a very old coined word that I made up a long time ago: yippy dog- slang, noun 1.young person who always attracts attention 2. annoying person or animal 3 infant child Also, one of my favorite anagrams: "A(n) ethic the: jimthedog" (jimthedog is a theory or system of mortal values) is an anagram of "teach the jig method" -Scott

Well, going back to the distant subject of coined words,Scott, I hope that you'll be able to accept the whimsical way that threads on this Board, particularly in Miscellany and Wordplay, develop lives of their own. Never fear that the original thread will be lost, someone will always comment on the original topic. Personally, I love the way that threads can take completely unexpected twists, throwing up delightful new queries, comments and tidbits along the way. I am moved to a repeat a paraphrased quote from Tolkien, one that seems apt to describe threads here: "The Thread goes ever on and on Down from the board where it began. Now far ahead the thread has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it on eager feet, Until it joins some larger way Where many words and ideas meet. And whither then? I cannot say." Salaam alaikum

I agree with Wow, Max. Great stuff. "And I will follow if I can." But, as the watch-elves would hiss on the borders of Lorien, "Yrch!"

Nice one, Max! Do you know the song cycle of the same name based on several Tolkien poems with music by Donald Swann (1967)?. There used to be a recording on Caedmon. Well worth listening to, if you can find it.

Yrch!I have taken to using that word as my spelling of "yuk", because the guttural sound seems to increase the sense of distaste.

Thanks for the recommendation. My local library has the songbook, but I'm not sure if it has a copy of the recording. Why do I feel a lament for Napster coming on?
