Windows OS's have a set of ALT sequences you can use. Hold down the ALT key and enter a 4 digit number on the numeric keypad. Note: some laptops don't have the numeric keypad, but you probably have a Character Map function hidden away as a pop-up menu when you click on the Windows logo key. Macs have another way of doing it. Linux machines generally have to use a Character Map. Or go one step further: create your own reference cheat-sheet with your special characters in it, for archival purposes.
