For so many years, the meaning of the American dream has / had been changed from generation to generation.

Which bold word should I use? Thanks.

has implies that change is still possibly happening; had implies that no more change is likely.

For many more years the meaning of the American dream may/ might still change from generation to generation.

Which bold word could/should/would best be used here?

(these are really difficult choices for language learners)
