On March 15, this venerable forum will celebrate one year of existence. I think we ought to do something to celebrate. Keeping in the spirit of the uniquely controlled anarchy of this community, I am going to suggest one type of celebration and then fall back and let y'all fall in.

To wit: how about we each post our favorite thread from the past year and contribute to the virtual party something comestible/potable unique to our individual regions?

Let's discuss it here first, and then, on the date, we'll start a new topic, to be the actual celebratory venue. I also suggest Jo aka jmh be the mistress of ceremonies, since she has demonstrated remarkable skill in that area.

(If this is too creepy to some, I do not want to hear about it)

AWADtalk is indeed something special, something worth celebrating. I am too new to have any clever ideas about which past threads deserve resurrection, and too lacking in talent to have any good new ideas. But I'll be in the cheering section when the more gifted among us go to work.

May I help decorate?
St. Patrick's Day is March 17.
Perhaps shamrocks combined with the golden wheel as in the center of the flag of India, for Anu's ancestry?

Aye, but not gone, Satin. But they don't last very long, let's see some proposals.

I'm still very new at this, but I'm already having such a good time, albeit without much sleep over the past few days since I joined! So, YES - let's do it - something - oh, I love to cook - I'll make the birthday cake - how does Annie Laurie's Famous Cold Oven Pound Cake sound - I can add fudge frosting and one super large candle... and I promise, I'll make sure each of you gets a bite (uh-huh)!

ps - Annie Laurie is my mother, so I can't share the recipe... family secret and all that

Bill, you said: let's see some proposals.
Will you marry me?

Great idea, Anna! You know what we could do?? Ooh! I just thought of this, so I'm just throwing out the first thing that pops into mind--may want some refining later.
I was thinking first that maybe we could all send Anu thank-you cards or messages, but that might overload the guy's
e-mail even more than it already is. And so then I thought, wouldn't it be nice if we could all make one post, or message, to send to him? And then it occurred to me--surely we can! What if somebody, maybe you, my friend, makes a post telling him thanks, why you like it or whatever. Then, the next person copies yours entirely
on to a new one
, then adds their own comments and posts that? Then the third one would copy that entire post
on to a new one, and add their comments, making the third paragraph. And so on, clear up to what? March 14th?

We should each sign our name, for clarification, and I think if a line of dashes or equal signs were placed after every one, that would help with visual ease of reading.

It is my opinion that duplications of sentiments will be
quite acceptable. I also foresee a potential problem of two people adding on at the same time--bridget96 posted
fourteen hundredths of a second before me the other day!
I guess, maybe, whose-ever post came out on the bottom could
take the responsibility for doing the editing to make them
all on one post again.

What do you-all think?

Love the idea, Jackie, but I'm afraid it will get unwieldy. Although there are supposedly about 2100 members of AWAD, someone estimated the other day that only about 70 or so post with any frequency. Even that many would create a difficulty, particularly with those coming on late, when a large and ever-growing piece has to be copied and pasted on. Besides that, I have had difficulty in copying and pasting onto the board, and have never succeeded in getting it to work, I don't know why, since I do it all the time with other stuff. (There is probably a simple explanation for that which hasn't occurred to me.)

Let me advance this suggestion -- all those who wish to do so (as many as possible) compose a brief message (say 25 words maximum to make it more interesting) and everyone post it on the 15th. Needless to say, we will all try our utmost for something clever, or outrageous, or both.

AnnaS - what a great idea you have to celebrate AWAD's birthday.

About resurrecting a favorite thread...I am afraid that with the 35 or so regular posters this might be a tad cumbersome with too much threads popping up with a NEW tag.

How about if we combine your and Jackie's suggestions this way...create a HAPPY BIRTHDAY thread. Anyone who wants to, can post either, a Thank-you to Anu, the reason why they like being here, a link to a favorite thread, and a celebratory regional recipe (or all four if they wish).

That way all the wishes will be neatly under one thread.

To get Anu to see it is an other matter...maybe wow or Jackie, who HAVE had success getting his attention, can send him a note saying "YOU MUST LOOK IN AWAD CHAT INFORMATION AND ANNOUNCEMENTS ON MARCH 15TH"

We should get someone in NZ to start the Happy Birthday thread since they turn to the 15th before we do.

What do you think?

Oh and Jackie, tsk-tsk-tsk, outrageously flirting with Bill. I thought you had left us poor souls in the gutter.

This is a great idea, AnnaS! I'l certainly go along with it - or whatever variation we agree on.

Mind you, the chances of us actually agreeing on anything is remote - already the ideas are proliferating.
But wot the hell, archie, toujours gaie, and all that. (my grey cat, darkness, has just asked me to type that last bit)
Whatever we decide - or not - I'll join in.

BTW, doesn't a year go by quickly when your doing something other than working?

Count me in, too. I think the add on message is a good idea, but I don't think the random access plan will work. Unfortunately, the only counter suggestion I can come up with would probably bog down. That is to build a message through Send Private in some predetermined order. The organizer would have a list of participants that would be part of the message and each person would remove his or her name after adding and would send the new message on to someone else.

A Happy Birthday THREAD!
Wonderful! Brilliant! Kudos! Merci, even.

Will the Max or Cap. Kiwi agree to begin it ('nother excellent idea!), and then as each time zone comes on, we'll just add to it?

I should like to claim the honor of notifying Anu of the thread, please.

Bridget96--! Congratulations to you, my dear!

I will happily contribute to a thread marking such an auspicious anniversary, but CapK tends to be up later than I and may well be posting here in the wee smalls of Thursday March 15, so the honour of starting will likely fall to him. This is also apt as his contribution will be of more skill and moment than mine could ever be.

Two points:

1. Your last sentence is utter crap, even though this remark may look as if it proves your point!

2. You've been around a lot longer than me, and to you the honour should fall.

Go for it - I may post second!

TOYOTA!! I was hoping that my effort at self-effacement would excuse me the arduous effort needed to come up with something worthy. You just won't let this lazy slob get away with it, will you CapK? If you don't hear much from me in the next 12 days, know that I'm trying to compose something more significant than "happy oneth"

May I second the proposal that Max Quordlepleen is the fit and proper person to commence this Anniversary Madrigal?

His constant flow of zany humour; his plethora of quotations, apt and inept, from such a bedazzling variety of sources ancient and modern; his partnership with a dyslexic keyboard; and the immense service he has done to us all by providing a repository for all of our memorabilia: for all of these and more, I believe he has shown himself to be admirably suited to the important and delicate task proposed.
I would like to add that this proposal should in no manner be considered to detract from the value and enjoyment provided by Mr Quordlepleen's illustrious compatriot, from whose posts we all enjoy the Capital Fruit.
Madam Chair, ladies and gentlemen, I submit this recomendation for your consideration.
(Turns and salutes the large poster of Anu hanging at the back of the stage and returns to his seat in the body of the hall)

Yes you may. (oops, was that a rhetorical question??) And I'll third or fourth or whatever it takes to finish the debate in record time!

Not so! It is simply that the dubious detritus under the keys has, under the influence of all that EMR, coalesced into primitive, but malevolent, lifeforms, lifeforms dedicated to making my typing seem slydexic. Stanley Miller would be proud.

Sorry all, you can second, third fourth ... nth all you like. Max it is. My unilateral decision, completely in keeping with the form of autocratic nanny government to which all kiwis and Kiwis have become used in the past 15 months!

Max, you have the floor – and 12 days to polish the toyota before giving us the full benefit (sic) of your first inaugural birthday oration. I suggest that you get the toyota down pat!

I'll post from Bangalore (IST). Will I be the fourth one? After Oz, NZ, Indonesia, India ... then the Uk or maybe Israel?
Is that the way it will go?
It would have been good to have William then the thread would have started with the rising sun.

I sure am glad Jo (aka jmh) has agreed to be Madam Chairman! I still shrink from the idea of too much structure in the Happy Birthday thread but will go with the majority. Now, let me get this straight. Does this mean I (GMT -5) have to post before Jackie does? (GMT-6) .

And Jackie, of course you are the only one to inform Anu of this initiative. After all, according to some theorists out there, you are he.

Small suggestions.
Could we put the date in the thread header name *and* for each individual post? i.e.
Happy Birthday AWAD, 15 March 2001
That way, should The Great Anu deign to print it out the correct date would be on each message. This would also make it easy when Anu gets next year's greetings, and next, and next and ...

Posters might also consider a "dateline" to start the body of the post to make it easier for viewers to see the sequence on posts. Like news stories start.
New Zealand -- Happy birthday etc.
Was there ever any question that Jackie is the one to draw The Wonderous One's attention to the thread?
Respectfully submitted

Good evening, Shabbat Shalom, and now the results of the Israel jury... whoops, sorry... YES Israel will join in - but as is the norm for me, I will answer with a question: if we are all going to post according to where we fit +/- GMT, shouldn't we perhaps have a particular time (in our own zone) at which we will do the duty? I'm at GMT+2... in other words, should I post at dawn, 7am... or when exactly would everyone propose, in order to make it truly an around the world (in order.... ) thread???

I should think that the times that people can get to the site would be sufficiently irregular that any attempt to have some time zone standard would be doomed to failure. Just wait until calendar March 15 in your time zone.

Tsuwm, as "the computer" attempts (albeit unsuccessfully) to eliminate paper (HA) you'll eventually (HA) have to get the "quilt-out" out and edit your quilt. They may replace cursive, but never a hand written "thank-you" note... I guess hand typed will do.[SIGH]

My computer and I are starting the celebration early by going out for a few pints tonight, anyone interested.

I think the idea of a thread to send to Anu is great. Here are a couple thoughts of mine.

Each persons post should exemplify their personality over the past year.

Perhaps everyone should try to post at the same time in their respective time zones so they all come in about an hour apart. Most of you seem to be at work when you post, so would some time around 9:00 be good for everyone? (9:00 to 10:30 is pretty much the only time I have access to a computer at school.)

I think the header for each post after the first should be the city from which you are posting. (ie. Wellington, New Zealand" ; "Cincinnati, Ohio, USA") Also, each person should probably reply to the initial post so they're all in a straight line in threaded view.

And finally, I think everyone should conclude their post with their board name, real name, and date and time of joining.
