onomasticon; from Greek onomastikos (of names), from onoma (name). Earliest documented use: 1710.

The definition of today's word only gives information about the onoma part of the word. How about sticon or masticon, if anybody knows? masticon makes me think of chewing
(masticar)-Spanish.
(masticare)-Italian. A name chewer?

The -ma- is part of the onoma-. I suspect the -sticon part is just an inflectional ending. zmjezhd or goofy could give a better explanation, I'm sure.

The ending -stikon looks like some derivational suffixes with a final neuter inflectional ending -on (cf. Latin -um).

The OED says:

Quote:
As noun < Hellenistic Greek ὀνομαστικόν onomasticon n. As adjective < ancient Greek ὀνομαστικός of or belonging to naming < ὀνομαστός named ( < ὀνομάζειν to name ( < ὄνομα name: see onomato- comb. form) + -τός , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + -ικός -ic suffix.

onoma "name" is verbed to onomazein "to name"
onomazein "to name" plus the suffix -tos gives onomastos "named" (the z turns into s?)
onomastos plus the suffix -ikos gives onomastikos "of or belonging to naming"
the noun form of onomastikos is onomastikon
