I wrote something a little while ago that put me in mind of the discussion here some time back on the difference between less and fewer, and when each should be used.
I was saying that I had telephoned someone and that I had gotten through faster than I'd expected to.
Should I have said more quickly than I'd expected to? Are there rules or customs re: when one should use fast and when quick is more proper?

furthermoreover, and in the second place, sport commentators talk about being fast and being quick as being two separate things.

Fast for body and quick for mind? Maybe?

Jackie: I think it's your choice. tsuwm: Sometimes they seem to be interchangeable, sometimes fast means able to get from one point to another in a short time and quick means able to make moves with the hands, feet, or head in a manner which fools or evades the opponent or gets one to the ball, puck, etc. more expeditiously than said opponent. There can be a difference, but they blend.

I'd say, at least in the context of American football (and probably real football, too), fast means being able to get from one end of the field to the other in a short period of time. Quick involves being able to do it without being interfered with by opponents.

I think that is my way of going at the problem as well.
