in practical terms, between gerontology and geriatrics? I have a friend who describes herself as a gerontologist; she treats the elderly--counsels them, that is, as part of a medical team. (She is a Ph.D., not an M.D.)

Just an offering, but perhaps that is the difference. One offers counseling and help of that nature, the other medical.

Luke is pretty right on. Geriatrics is all medical; gerontology is, according to AHD4, "[t]he scientific study of the biological, psychological, and sociological phenomena associated with old age and aging."

Golly Day, thanks Faldage. I volunteer, for the last ten years, in a home for retired citizens, and it was just my observation, as I walked past offices and read the titles of the occupants on the doors. Glad to know I had made a good observation.
