I was looking for recipes a little while ago, and came across one where the sender had put that her sister had "discovered" this bread when she had dough in the machine and the hydro went out.

I'm pretty sure she meant when the power (electricity) went out. I am wondering in what part of the country do people say the hydro went out? (The writer was listed as being in the U.S.)

And what do folks in other countries say?

I gather that, in addition to hydroelectric power, the Brits also use it for a hydropathic establishment - that's a health spa to you and me, J.

I just wonder how you manage to pronounce the th at the end of a word combined with an s as a first in the next word. Impossible to me. ;-)

It's probably easier if you've been pronouncing the TH for most of your life.

I understood the meaning but still it can't be correct.....hydro/water is turned into electric power!

It wouldn't have been the water that 'went out'

I wonder what bread would come out of a dough that lost its hydro. A very incorrect sort of bread it must be. smile

In my experience it's common enough to hear electrical service referred to as "the electricity" (or even "the electric") "the power," "the lights," etc. The phrase "hydroelectric power" is also in common use where such a source of electricity exists. I don't find it surprising at all that domestic service would take on the shortened form of the source.

All through the southern area of the US is an entire system of hydro produced power. I haven't lived down there in years and I understand the system is not as comprehensive as it once was, but in the past the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) was responsible for bringing power into areas that had never had it in the early decades of the twentieth century. It consisted of a huge series of dams and reservoirs.

For years all BC electricity came from hydroelectric dams from the company called BC Hydro. Thus we still pay our hydro bill (electricity) or complain that the hydro went out.

They use hydro power in NZ too and you can go on a tour underground to see the machinery....Its amazing. You ride down in a bus for miles underground.

Classic and most used word is kuuroord. But other words are coming up like Wellness Centre, Wellness & Spa. Mostly kuuroord though, almost like the German word Kurort.
