The full history of the name York is a series of wearings down. The Romans called it Eboracum, the Angles converted that to Eoforice (pronounced something like /eoveh reach eh/), the Danes turned that into Yorvik and that got worn down to the present day York.

Or else I have been left stranded by outdated linguistic conjecture once again. (Oh, the shame of it all!)
