Calabash was. He did not know. If I'm not mistaken, she was the landlady who let Clayton, Jackson, and Durante stay in her boardinghouse for months on end when they were having trouble making payments, and she didn't hound them (too much) for the rent. Of the three, Durante was the one who eventually made it big, and he kept a slot on his show for Eddie(?) Jackson (Clayton was gone by then) so he could get him a paycheck once a year, anyway...and he never forgot to acknowledge Mrs. Calabash, even after she became the late Mrs. Calabash. Urban myth or no, that is a really fascinating story.

Well, a quick Googling of the question reveals a couple of common explanations, none of them authenticated...and all of them different from what I proposed. So much for the indulgent landlady. Maybe we can start a rumor?
