Never assume anything. I just now realized that Arthur Sullivan's Strephon (Iolanthe), an "Arcadian shepherd," had a Classical origin.

Google has something to say about everything This one’s about Arcadia, from the sixteenth century. And this one seems to be a previous incarnation of Strephon the Arcadian shepherd, done by Gilbert & Someoneelse ten years before Iolanthe. "Strephon" means "lover"? Or was I just skimming too fast? From Iolanthe -
