Discussing acronyms earlier today with some friends I had an intriguing thought...what is it called when you turn words into an acronym? The best I could come up with was 'to acronyse' (acronyze if you spell things differently over the pond) and wondered what the logophiles among you (cough all of you cough) thought?

I've always liked acronymize, just for the ludicrosity of it.
and it's in the Online OED, which has this disfortunate citation:

Byte is a fairly far-fetched way of acronymizing binary digit eight.

the usual story is that 'byte' was a purposeful misspell of 'bite' made to avoid accidental mutation to bit (or to differentiate from that other bite).

Urban dictionary has acronymize too. So it's vulgarized already.

acronymise is a bit of a mouthful isn't it! I shall take both of your words for it (more dubious though urban dictionary...grrrr), I prefer acronyse myself :p It is a very odd word tbph especially considering what it describes...

I go along with the polloi and say acronymize as it scans like and rhymes with economize. Acronyze sounds like you're trying to make something sharp. As for byte, half a byte is a nibble.

Norma does get down and dirty sometimes. If you love her you gotta love her like she is and not how you'd like her to be.

I'll admit to laughing at one of today's featured UD words:
PHOBAR - -adjective, Acronym for "PHOtoshopped Beyond All Recognition."

there is a concept that actually did need a word/acronym

p.s. - what's the "Norma" reference about?!
-ron (hoping it's not too) obvious

Urban Dictionary 's got that one too. Acronyze is close to agonize and acrid. Painful amputation of characters.

err...I have a feeling that you have two manias there...acronym and nympho crazy...is that the actual word for addiction to acronyms?

p.s. I found this whilst searching for the words an acronym stood for and found it rather funny... acronyms
