As I travelled toward Siena (the city) I wondered whether I would see sienna (the color). Very much so! The entire city was sienna. Every building was apparently made from the clay.

But the color, sienna, comes from the term terra di Siena (earth of Sienna). It's not a controversial etymology, is it?

when I visited the city, I was expecting to see
the color, and I did.

google SIENNA and 99.9% images are of Sienna Miller LOL so I added the word colour to my search and that got a better result.  The process to create burnt sienna, is to take raw sienna and heat to remove the water from the clay, this gives it a warm reddish-brown colour.

I only meant that when I visited the city, I was expecting to see the color, and I did.I just don't understand. Maybe it's just me who's confused. It's kind of like saying I went to San Francisco, and I saw the Golden Gate Bridge. Some day I hope to get to Siena, but then it'll be for the Palio di Siena ( link).

Sienna is a remarkable color much more pleasant than ochre. I once worked as a scene painter and was amazed that by adding a little cerulean with white to the sienna the result would be a soft gray.

Sure and well observed. All blue shades mixed with brown shades give grey shades in wide varieties. I went to Siena and expected to see lots of colours ( palio) and I did. I went to the country side around Siena and I saw the raw pigments of siena earth. It's not exactly like the stones of the city. Another wonderful place for coloured earth is Rousillon in France : link

That is a very beautiful town too. Such class, such

So much more pleasing to the eye than many different colours.
Those pictures look like an artists impression of a town. Its amazing that it is just normal peoples houses.
