unless i was tripping, it was a Wordsmith Word of the Day a little while back (probably in '10 but maybe '09).

the definition was along the lines of 'describing a person or object by highlighting the negation.'

a bad example would be saying a person is smart or somewhat intelligent by saying 'well, they're not stupid.' all other examples would be in a similar format.

thanks to anyone who might be able to help me out here.

I doubt that you aren't referring to Litotes.
