The Spanish conquistadors were looking for the "fabled lands of
gold" in their conquest of North America. The fable is kept
alive here with the annual coronation of the King and Queen
of the Kingdom of Quivira and the Seven Cities of Cibola,
targets of the long gone Spanish. It is the social event of
the Autumn season. The King is always an outstanding gentleman
of local worth, financially, business wise or some social virtue.
His queen is the daughter of another outstanding family. The
Princesses are debutantes for the year from the city, and
the countesses are similar from neighboring counties. There
are pages of the court: elementary school children, sons and
daughters of local families in the social calendar. The
Cardinal who crowns the pair is a Media anchor for the local
news. Very uppity. All starting with the Spanish looking for
gold.

Yupper!
It is usually in early autumn, as I recall. I really never pay
a lot of attention to it, other than to look at the pictures in
daily media. I enjoy things monarchical, and find it interesting
that in America, which loves its republican democracy, we still
have titular monarchs all over the place such as this.
We have Dairy Queens, Miss America with her "tiara", King and Queen of the Prom, etc. I'll watch for it and then post some info when it is in the paper. They dress up in "Henry VIII"
style costumes: the whole shebang.
