Warned by a greener than green Google logo I got to know there is this thing called "Earth day". Fine. I'll celebrate it by putting snails and tiny slugs that are devouring the pansies into the compost bin where, after having worked their way through tasty morsels of foliage they'll have a fair chance of escape as the thing gives some opportunites to that aim. This in stead of tossing them into my neighbours overpowering bamboo bush. The Eyjafjallökull is prolonguing its activities to give more weight and perspective to this day. I've become an enthusisatic Eyjafjallökull fan. Anyone who can pronounce the name is directly considered a linguistic marvel. I wish you all a very pleasant Earth Day.

How to pronounce Eyjafjallajökull. It's the double Ls that's the trick.

Ah,eijafjallatjoklut. There's two surprise t-s in that word. Faldage's blog-link offers a real seismographic approach of the word. Real funny. I'd only heard the pronounciation on german TV and with the typical 'Gründlichkeit' it sounded like having three t-s.

Yes, the Language Log posting is pretty good. The double-ells are basically a '/tl/ sound, with the l being a fricative not unlike the Welsh ll sound. It's so amazing that when I was studying linguistics back in the late '70s, you needed about $100K worth of machinery to make one of those spectrograms and now you can do it on a laptop with open source, free software.
Ceci n'est pas un seing.
