in researching 'zythum' (link) I also ran across 'zyxt' - actually this happened in reverse; I was trying to verify that zyxt was the last word in the OED and discovered it ain't that anymore, and zythum is. Ammon Shea verifies this in his Reading the OED, by saying zyxt "has been stripped of its headword status and moved to the middle of a heap of variant spellings of see", which I can also see from an OED2 entry (online).

what I'm wondering then is, was there really a headword for zyxt in OED2, and it was just dropped? is this typical of what they're doing in the online updates?! and, if so, what's that say about maintaining a history of the language??

It's also the last word in the four pages per page version that is also known as the Compact Edition of the OED. I don't think it's the same as the one Buffy mentioned, but I may be wrong. Nothing in it that I can see says it's the second edition.

The only thing that turned up at first online search is :

zyxt;
(obsolete, Kentish) second-person singular past tense of to see
[edit] TriviaThis word is notable for being the last word in the Oxford English Dictionary. The word was also used as a trade name by a soap manufacturer, presumably to suggest that it was the 'last word in cleanliness' (?)(?)

Retrieved from "http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/zyxt"

The Collins ends with: Zyrian ; noun, the Finnic language spoken by the Komi [syn: Komi]

Zyrian

It might be a dialect of Komi, aka Komi-Zyrian (link).

that's the one I mean. I have the big, one-volume, micro-print version, with a very cool half-spheroid magnifying glass.

In the following of your zythum word you also mention zyzzogeton

"NOTE: the last word in W3 is 'zyzzogeton', a
genus of large South American leafhoppers"

Whenever one thinks to have seen the weirdest animal, the next one turns up:
>>cutie

Ah, but Jackie, don't look at the legs.
Look at those petlike eyes. I hesitate between the "faithfull to the end of times" dog and the "only mind my business "cat.
