A friend wrote me, using the phrase "desaturating the color". I think I get what it means, but would be interested in hearing from all you folks who know about the use of color. Thanks.

Making the colors less intense. Think about a photo that is over exposed; the colors are desaturated - paler and with less contrast.

This is saturated color if ever you want some. But you have to be like this woman, sit in front of the painting and experience the measure and motion of saturated color.

When in watercolors colors have run out of hand and have become oversaturated, holding the image under the tab desaturates it.

How different it looks in your snapshot. Jackie, for more reading on HSL and HSV, the S in which words stands for saturation.

You're welcome. This is yet another photograph in which I am just out of frame (off-camera, offstage, hinter den Kulissen, or parergon).

HSL stands for hue, saturation and lightness, while HSV stands for hue, saturation and value. Wow. When I get hints like this about how much there is that I don't know, I am humbled. Wow again.

Took my time to get through that article attentively. Must admit I only really understand the lower "Usage" part of it.
The HSV - HSL model is used on my classical radio forum to color text with. It does not have the little cubes or quadrants we have here. It gives a large quadrant for 'saturation' and a side bar for 'hue'. To 'make' your color you must combine the two.

I do understand there is a difference in perception and understanding between colored light and colored dyes/pigments (CMYK).
(Painters mostly just use RYB : red , yellow and blue ). The gist of it is all too difficult for a mathematical nitwit. But still, I got some of it. I do understand the hue- saturation principle.
Beautiful article but oh.. maths!
