Can anyone think of a/the song that has the line in it that's something like "riddle muh ree muh rye"? I can hear that line in my head but can't think of any of the rest of it.

I believe it's a fairly common chorus line found in any number of English folk songs. Good luck tracking it down to an original.
Edit: Afterthought.
Or either Irish, one.

You might ask a musicologist or ethno-musicologist (maybe Buffalo Shrdlu knows a candidate) about non-lexical vocables in folk song lyrics or some such. In jazz, it's called scat singing.

In chorus years ago we sang a song: (I don't remember the title) "I love to go a wondering, across the mountain track, and when I go I always have my knapsack on my back. Valderee, Valder I" {Ree and Rye - reminded me of what you are looking for} VALDEREE, VALDERYE.

The Happy Wanderer ( link). Written in German as Der fröhliche Wanderer shortly after WW2 by Friedrich-Wilhelm Möller ( link). An Austrian rock band, Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung (aka EAV, link) supplied new and satirical lyrics to it about the late neo-fascist politician Jörg Haider.

Jackie, I found this: riddle me, and perhaps it's a song written on one of those riddles? or something similar?

Thanks so much for helping me to return to a pleasant memory: the years in Chorus.
